January 15th, 2012 Los Angeles

Happy Birthday to my wife Ellie, and her twin Soseh!

I leave for New York City in two days to play a show with Storm Large at Le Poison Rouge on January 19th, followed by a week of rehearsals of her newly updated one woman show "Crazy Enough."  Aside from being in NYC in January, I'm so excited to be hanging with my friends and playing music in the Big Apple.

Here are some lovely pictures taken by the incredible Jennie Baker of Storm Large's NYE shows in Portlandn just 2 weeks ago.

I have achieved Nirvana!  A perfect selection of new vinyl at Amoeba today!  All selections kick ass without a weak link among them. Thanks to Korny for my holidays gift certififcate that made this all possible!  I am jamming on these tunes!  Here they are...

Also here are some photos of Storm Large's New Years Eve show at the Alberta Rose Theatre taken by James Perkins!  It was a great night had by all...

Happy New Year!

After weekly Wednesday drummer breakfast.  Next to me is Jose Medeles, (Breeders, Oohlas) and Scott Mcpherson, (Elliot Smith, She and Him, Beck, Oohlas) both in dark jackets, and owners of "Revival Vintage Drums."  The best vintage drum store in the country!  I cannot speak highly enough of them!

Here is what I've been listening to lately...

December 1st, 2011Los Angeles
Just got home from playing with
The Coals at Fais Do Do and introducing some of the guys to my favorite LA taco truck El Chato.
Fun show in an amazing 1920's bank building turned into a nightclub. It was very beautiful outside and inside.

Here are some photos...

Also came across this where they used The Oohlas's "Small Parts."  The song starts around the minute mark.

 November 12th 2011 Los Angeles

Just found this video of Storm Large singing Halleluja at the Aladdin Theater in Portland Oregon at her holiday show in 2009 with Holcombe Waller and Wade Mccollum.  Although I have known her for years, this was my first show I ever played with her and I was standing side stage watching this beautiful piece in tears...

 November 7th, Los Angeles

I'm wide awake at 5:30am thanks to the time change so I thought to mention that I'm gonna be selling this beautiful 1964 Epiphone ravoli bass guitar.  Its in fantastic condition but I just dont ever seem to use it.  I prefer my 1975 P Bass.  If you love in LA and are interested please email me.

I also found this old Everclear poster going thru some boxes the other day.  I remeber Tony Kanl from No Doubt telling me backstage in Memphis that he would KILL to have a gold record (we had just received our first for Sparkle and Fade), little did we know the crazy success No Doubt would go on to have!

November 1st, Los Angeles

Hope everyone had a great and happy Halloween!  I feel hungover from all the candy!  Anyway, here is a photo of me playing with the great
TIm Easton the other night at the Coals show.  He played first and asked "who's drums are behind me?"  Get on up here and play a couple with me."  So I did and it was so fun!.  Two songs without an idea on how they went or where they were going.  Look at how I'm watching him trying to get any clues of where he is going next.  Seat of the pants type of stuff.

Here is a photo of the Coals from Friday night as well...Thanks for everyone who came out it was a lot of fun!

October 27th, Los Angeles

Just finally got around to watching Kill You Idols on Netflix last night.  Pretty interesting its freedom of music and ideas.    100% artistic freedom is pretty inspiring!

 October 24th, Los Angeles

While going thru some old computer files, I found a bunch of short movies edited on imovie while touring with Everclear back in 2000.  I put it to some of my original music and think it came out rather nice.  It was fun to see again after all these years....

Some things I've been listening to a lot of recently...

October 15, Los Angeles

Last night I got a chance to hang out with an old and very dear rock n roll friend who happens to now work with The Foo Fighters.  I was lying on the couch watching the kids and some tv when he called and said can you make it to the forum in an hour?  To which i replied YES!  And so it came to be that I watched The Foo Fighters from techs side stage bring the house down in LA.    Rami Jaffrey was also playing keyboards with them. He has played on many Everclear records and was in the "I Will Buy You a New Life" video. It was good to see him again and say hi.  What a fun night and a BIG BIG BIG thank you to my buddy Sean for making it happen!

 October 14th Los Angeles

It is with great regret that I am breaking up with my local street taco truck...El Chato.  We've had a great several year run.  Now, I have never been one of those "I discovered it first so I am cooler than you" types, but I will say in this case, I was one of their earlier customers and enjoyed being able to walk right up to the window with no one there and place my order.  I LOVE their asada tacos/burritos.  I actually havent tried anything else.  There is no need to. Now everytime I go, there is a line of 25 people waiting to order and the same number waiting to pick up.  I have reached a point where I am unwilling to stand in two seperate lines for up to 45 minutes for a burrito, even one as AMAZING as this.  So tonight I announce I am taking a break from my little taco truck of happiness.   "El Chato...its not you...its me."

ps. I once did the math and figured out that if my wife and I each ate a carne asada burrito everynight El Chato is open ( 6nights a week) for a year, It would only cost us $2000.  Well worth it I'd say!!!

October 12th Los Angeles

Here is a video from The Coals with me on drums!  We shot three songs that day so I'll post more as they are finished.

October 7th Los Angeles

Finally cleared out my studio of a ton of junk and am getting it back in shape for recording!  I am working on a new project of my own. I will be announcing details on this site a little later as things start to take shape.  Until then here are some of shots of my studio where we recorded The Oohlas's Best Stop Pop.

October 3rd 2011 Los Angeles

Today at the gym I saw the man who played the dad (Dan Lauria) in The Wonder Years.  What a thrill because I always loved that show!  Ahhh... the benefits of living in smoggy dusty Los Angeles.

Also, watch this movie!  It is on Netflix instant download right now.  Love the music!  Love the fashion!  Love the movie!

September 15th Los Angeles

Over the weekend I was up in the Northwest playing 2 shows with Storm Large.
The Triple Door in Seattle is a great venue to see an artist!  Great sound, great people, and really good Thai food!  Then Saturday, in Portland we played a benefit for Ecotrust. I flew from Portland back to LA on 9-11.  After sitting on the broken plane for 2 1/2 hours, I arrived and jumped into my van and drove to San Diego to pick up art for my wife Ellina Kevorkian, who is curating a show here in Los Angeles which opens next week.  I post the details here for the show and opening here in the next few days.

September 5th 2011 Los Angeles

I spent yesterday recording a live performance video with the LA based band The Coals.  Had a great time playing tunes all day with great people.  Here is the drum set up I used.  24 inch DW kick, a 13'' vintage Duoplex snare, a R.O.C snare drum mounted as a floor tom and a brazilian surdo drum.

September 4th 2011 Los Angeles

Here are some records I've been grooving on lately...

July 20th 2011 Los Angeles

Just a few updates...I was honored to be asked (thanks Darice!) last week to play with a local LA band called "The Coals" at their outdoor gig at the "Grand "O'l Echo" in Silverlake.  I was unable to get to rehearse at all with them prior so I just showed up and winged it.  I gotta say it turned out great with smiles all around and an offer to join them at future shows.  I was reallty excited because I have seen them several times before and really like their songs and Jason's voice.  I'll keep you informed on upcoming shows in the LA area.

Also, I had an idea of posting pages of my art journal/diary I kept the last 6 years of Everclear.  I have played around with the idea of making a picture book out of them but for right now I was thinking of sharing them with you.  Touring can become VERY mundane in the downtime between shows and so these journals were a way for me to be creative on planes, buses, cars, and rather drab hotel rooms.  With my wife being an artist/painter, I would also try to hit any and all museums that might be in any given city, and would often return super jazzed and dive straight into my journal work.  Please keep checking back as I will be changing these periodically.

July 1st Los Angeles

Arrived home today from Australia after 45 combined hours of flying, a volcano in Chile blowing ash across the oceans that shut down the ENTIRE aviation industry for 2 days, 5 shows in three cities,  three being an hour long cabaret piece, and two shows being that plus a second set of a rock show, and a country of the warmest people you will ever meet.   I LOVE AUSTRALIA!  I haven't been here since 1998 when Everclear last toured here but it still always surprises me with how much I always come away singing its praises.

Our main reason for going was the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.  We performed three shows in their main theatre and the response and reviews have been outstanding.  Click the links below to read some.

Adelaide #1

Adelaide #2

Adelaide #3

Melbourne show

Thanks to everyone who made it possible.  To my musical travel companions, who talent is only overshadowed by how much fun they are to travel with, ie. Storm Large, James Beaton and Scott Weddle, I say "Day Beers!"

June 4th Los Angeles

Got back from rocking with Storm Large in San Francisco at the Red Devil Lounge.  Friday its up to Portland for Storm's show at the Aladdin Theatre.  Hope to see you there.

Also a very big thanks to Cody Molica for these nice pics he took of me at the show.

March 23rd Los Angeles

Please check out my friend Julie Cain's new revamped website and anticipated release of her new ep. "Picture Show."  I played drums on her new tracks and am quite pleased with the results.  My favorite is a song called Comfort Me in which the drums were recorded with just two mics and has some timpani.  I believe it is one of my favorite drum tracks I've ever recorded.  My favorite drums I record are always the understated ones that groove and contribute to the song.   Sign up on her site to get show announcements so you can come say hi in person if you live in and around Los Angeles.

March 15th 2011 NYC

Tonight is our (Storm Large)  first of two shows in NYC at Joe's Pub.  Both Scotty and I have colds we've been nursing for a couple days now.  Flying the red eye out from Portland doesn't seem to help any when you are sick, but we are ready to deliver the goods tonight and tomorrow.  Apparently Steve Martin...yes that Steve Martin, is playing the show right before us at Joe's pub.

Last night we had good food and good company at Storm's theatre producers house. Scotty and I were very pleasantly surprised to find out that she had some leftover whiskey from our Scotland trip last fall which we made the most of. Many stories were told and retold till we were crying with laughter. By the time Scotty and I were walking back to our NYC Hare Krishna lodging...yes that Hare Krishna, my throat hurt from laughing so hard! I believe its called a throat cramp?

March 5th 2011 Portland

Wow! what a night!  Last night (we) Storm Large played with the Oregon Symphony at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to a sold out house.  Even though I get to sit onstage with her every night, I'm still amazed by her singing and ability to keep a 3000 seat venue spellbound all the while giving them the double bird.  Yes, its true.  While talking to a stagehand during intermission, I found out that she was the first person in the history of the Oregon Symphony to flip off the audience, and they loved her all the more for it!

Much love to Storm and James Beaton for allowing me to be a part of their craziness.  Much love to Scotty Weddle for always making wise and cracking jokes and sometimes actually getting around to playing guitar as well.

Sparky, if you are reading this, thanks for the "wink wink nudge nudge" on the monitors.  So good to see you again!

VITA!!!  Thanks for everything you do to make this all possible.

January 2nd 2011 Los Angeles

Got back from Portland last night.  I rocked in the New Year with Storm Large at the Alberta Rose Theatre.  An incredible evening of music and friends.  I feel so fortunate to be playing with musicians of this caliber and the fact that they are my friends just sweetens the deal.  Thanks to Storm and James Beaton for allowing me to be a part of their last year of musical surprises.  Last night, I gotta say I was completely blown away by Holcomb Waller who came out and sang a few songs with Storm.  What an amazing talent and a sweetheart of a guy.   I hope he and I can work together on something in the future.  Thanks again to Davey Loprinzi  who always houses and feeds me every time I turn up on his doorstep, as well as James and Joelle, who have the best bathtub with the hottest water in all of Portland!

Happy 2011 everyone!  May be it filled with peace love and happiness.
